Global wrangling about Blackboard's patent

Washington, August 2006 – The case is delicate and uncertainty abounds. On July 26, US provider Blackboard announced that it has been granted a U.S. patent for technology used in internet-based education support systems and tools. Because the patent, Nr. 6,988,138, covers core technology used in most of the Learning Management Systems (LMS) and because Blackboard has filed a lawsuit against the Canadian company Desire2Learn for patent infringement, the whole eLearning industry is alarmed. Alternate Pricing Models for LMS Usage Fees

Elliott MasieNew York, August 2006 – (by Elliott Masie) I frequently get asked how best to handle Learning Management System (LMS) usage fees for organizations with a high level of turnover or temporary employees. The problem: Not tracking training for these employees in an LMS because per-user pricing makes it too costly to enter so many high turnover employees. Open source forges ahead in UK education

Oxford, August 2006 – More than three quarters of all of UK Higher Education (HE) and Further Education (FE) institutions consider open source options when engaging in IT procurement exercises. The survey organized by the JISC-funded OSS Watch service also found that 56% of FE institutions use Moodle as a Virtual Learning Environment. [more...]

Addis Ababa, August 2006 – Engineering universities and technical vocational education centers (TVET) are to be fully connected to an eLearning system in the next three years, Ethiopia’s Ministry of Capacity Building has disclosed.
