Romanian Schools Join Think.com Community

Bucharest (RO), December 2007 - (by Elena Lita) Oracle has implemented Rumania's first nation-wide educational programme dedicated to students aged between nine and eighteen years. Think.com is a free web-based environment for primary and secondary students and teachers and is designed to assist schools with the implementation and use of state-of-the-art technology for educational purposes. At the end of November, 1,600 teachers across the country, including all areas of specialization, attended training courses on using the Think.com programme.

In accordance with the terms of a Memorandum of Understanding signed with the Romanian Ministry of Education and Research and Youth in January 2006 and two addenda to it signed in May 2006 and January 2007, Oracle launched the training courses for the teachers who will use the Think.com collaborative platform in the classroom in the last week of November. During the 2006-2007 school year, 500 Romanian pupils aged nine to eighteen years from sixteen pilot schools were introduced to the worldwide Think.com community for the first time, and based upon the highly successful results of this first phase, Oracle and the Romanian Ministry of Education decided to extend the program at the national level.

"This partnership represents a good example of the positive manner in which private companies and governments can cooperate for the benefit of young people", said Stefan Cojanu, Managing Director Oracle Romania. "By implementing this programme, every year 160,000 pupils will benefit from having access to a modern educational system, allowing them to stay connected all the time with any Think.com member school in the world."

The training session drew 1600 teachers serving grades K3-12 and took place in eleven cities: Bucuresti, Sibiu, Cluj-Napoca, Timisoara, Iasi, Focsani, Targoviste, Craiova, Ploiesti, Pitesti, and Constanta. The programme is attested on the national level and is certified by the Romanian Ministry of Education and Research and Youth as an Educational Content Provider. Primary schools and high schools can use the Think.com programme as an optional course or as an extracurricular activity for students in grades K3-12, regardless of their specialization.

Think.com provides all teachers and students with a protected email account and a personal web page where they can publish texts, upload images, and host discussions within the Think.com community. Accessible from a standard web browser, student members can stay connected to their classrooms from home, school, or the library. Think.com uses the power of Oracle's database technology to host, manage, and operate remotely from the United States. Teachers can use Think.com to post multimedia classroom activities, provide online project team environments, and teach technology skills to their students. Teachers can also use Think.com to communicate with parents by posting homework and classroom news to their Parents' Page.

By joining the Think.com community, students can design their own Web pages, uploading photos, texts, and movies. They can also share informational content and take part in study and debate groups online with students and teachers from other schools and countries, in a secure environment that is monitored by teachers. The Think.com web-page builder is an easy way to build content-rich websites. In minutes, a page can be created with text, lists, pictures, and other forms of content. Since Think.com is template driven, there is no need to know HTML or any other programming language.

Perhaps the best benefit of Think.com is that as part of the Oracle Education Foundation's philanthropic initiative, it is free. Schools do not need to buy any special computers or software to use Think.com; only Internet access is required. Think.com has approximately 6,000 member schools reaching more than 275,000 students in 26 countries.
