Copenhagen (DK), September 2021 - With their most recent software update, the Danish edtech CanopyLAB have released a new AI-powered engine for their Learning Experience Platform (LXP) that can automatically build and curate courses based on the content you put in the cloud.

Because learning requires much more than watching a video or filling in a blank, the learning success team at CanopyLAB noticed a distinct pattern: most clients and partners already had a lot of great content in terms of videos, PowerPoints, and audiobooks, but lacked the teaching background necessary to curate the content for it to be meaningful for the learner. Much like in-person teaching, the most time-consuming hurdle was transforming course materials and desired outcomes into engaging learning content. As a result of the realization, and after 2.5 years of dedicated research and development, the engineering team has released its new AI-powered engine for the CanopyLAB Learning Experience Platform (LXP) that can automatically build and curate courses after analyzing the content

In CanopyLAB's client upload to the cloud, the use of artificial intelligence is threefold:

  • curriculum automation
  • personalized course recommendations
  • auto-generated content-specific quizzes and exercises

Based on the materials added to a unit by the course creator, CanopyLAB's AI engine can automatically generate your unit description that details what the course is about, course objectives, and learner outcomes. All of these features can save a course creator countless hours of work.

Too often instructors are saddled with the burden of countless hours of lesson planning and worksheet creation when they should be focusing on what matters: attending to the individual needs of those taking the course. Our AI engine is based on the teacher brains and learning science research methods that went into developing it, ensuring that course designers aren't saddled with the rote tasks of lesson creation and users aren't lost because of lack of direction around course content.

"Training everyone how to build an incredible digital learning experience, while also writing an engaging introduction or summaries for course content is simply not scalable. However, we can train an algorithm to write it for us - saving valuable time we can use for engaging with students instead", noted CEO Sahra-Josephine Hjorth.

Leveraging AI, CanopyLAB now delivers next-generation recommendations of what courses to take, exercises to complete, and people to follow for inspiration. Unlike other networks, these recommendations aren't based on a marketing algorithm to boost course attendance or to sell your per-click data to advertisers (we don't advertise on our platforms!). Research indicates that we learn more when we learn together, which increases the urgent need to connect learners with like-minded peers, and recommendations are meant to build community around those actively using the courses to develop.

The CanopyLAB LXP enables course creators to leverage more than 55 exercise templates to create engaging learning experiences. Our annual learner survey exposed, though, that it can be difficult for course hosts to choose which exercise template to use.

"While we often work with learning nerds - a group we strongly identify with - a biology teacher once reminded us that you could be an incredible teacher without being a learning expert. He loved geeking out about biology, but not about learning design, and he couldn't define social or adaptive learning or pick between a learning journal and a mind map. That interaction taught us an incredibly important lesson: We must offer more support," Hjorth reflects.

Leveraging AI, choosing, and customizing exercises have never been easier. After uploading course materials including documents and videos, course creators are recommended specific exercises and advised on their optimal application, based on the uploaded content and what part of a learning course they are designing. The AI engine can even generate content for the course creator based upon up to 12 out of the 55+ exercises at one time. In addition, the AI engine instantly creates multiple choice quiz questions related to the course content.
