Sustainable Development - Learning from Each Other
Vilnius (LT), February 2012 - Looking forward to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development Rio + 20 in 2012, participants are invited to take part in the ATEE Spring University 2012 Conference entitled "20 Years for Sustainable Development: Learning from Each Other". The event will be hosted by the Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences in Vilnius, Lithuania, 03-05 May 2012.
The global strategy for sustainable development, Agenda 21, was introduced in 1992 at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro. Education is crucial in achieving sustainable development: Agenda 21, Chapter 36 stresses that "Education, including formal education, public awareness, and training should be recognized as a process by which human beings and societies can reach their fullest potential."
The United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014) seeks to integrate the principles, values, and practices of sustainable development into all levels of education and learning.
ATTE is the Association for Teacher Education in Europe, and the Organization's Spring University 2012 Conference will share best practices in education for sustainable development (ESD) including
- sustainable development topics relevant to local circumstances and cultural environment
- successful methods in developing ESD-related competences of learners
- new emerging competences of educators to be active in ESD
- approaches to integrate ESD into school curricula and non-formal education
- ESD in higher education
- ransformation of management of educational institutions according to sustainable development principles.
During the Conference a paper session and workshops are planned.
The closing date for submission of papers is 02 April 2012; notification of acceptance is 16 April 2012.
