New Partnership

Open Standards and Transformation Across Latin America

Sao Paulo (BR), May 2025 — Education and technology leaders are working together to reduce costs, increase efficiency, and improve learner and educator experiences across Latin America.

During BETT-Brazil, the non-profit organizations 1EdTech® Consortium (1EdTech) and Ibero-American Association of Edtechs (IAAE) announced a joint venture, 1EdTech LATAM, to raise awareness of and implement 1EdTech’s open interoperability and digital credential standards in Latin American countries. The collaboration includes other founding partners, Instructure, POK - Proof of Knowledge, PowerSchool, and Territorium.

Open standards, including Learning Tools Interoperability® (LTI®), OneRoster®Edu-APIComprehensive Learner Record Standard (CLR Standard®) and Open Badges, are already being utilized by education technology providers and educational institutions in the region. Through an organized and intentional effort to use open standards, the providers and educational institutions say the cost and time required to implement new tools will go down while improving the user experience and security of those tools.

"The creation of 1EdTech LATAM means our institutions and edtechs can now lead innovation with global standards, localized support, and a shared commitment to impact learners across all contexts," said Fernando Valenzuela, IAAE President.
"1EdTech’s mission is to unite the education community to build an integrated foundation of open standards that make educational technology work better for everyone, reducing complexity, accelerating innovation and expanding possibilities for learners worldwide," said Curtiss Barnes, 1EdTech CEO.

Open standards and trusted certifications allow edtech tools and systems to:

  • Reduce integration costs and eliminate manual work through automated updates and consistent data structures
  • Build trust with institutions by ensuring interoperability, privacy, security, and responsible data use
  • Improve access, learning outcomes, and user experience at scale
  • Seamlessly support credentialing within the 1EdTech TrustEd Digital Credentials ecosystem

"At Instructure, we believe that meaningful learning should be accessible, equitable, and transformative—no matter where it happens," said Ryan Lufkin, Vice President of Global Academic Strategy at Instructure.
"As a global edtech company with Mexican origins, Territorium is proud to support 1EdTech’s expansion into the LATAM region," said Guillermo Elizondo, CEO and Co-Founder of Territorium.
